We are delighted to be able to offer a paid 6-month ‘Working with Rivers’ Internship at the Findhorn, Nairn & Lossie Rivers Trust (FNLRT)

This is an exciting development opportunity for people who are new to the conservation sector to work alongside various members of the FNLRT team over the coming months to contribute to our work delivering vital habitat improvement, restoration and monitoring works in the Findhorn, Nairn and Lossie catchments. This internship forms part of a wider programme of internships with participating Rivers and Fisheries Trusts around Scotland.

 

Role title: Working with Rivers Intern

Salary: £13.45 per hour

Contract: 6 months fixed term from start date (May-October preferable)

Hours: Full time, 35 hours per week, or potential to work on an agreed part time basis

Location: Findhorn, Nairn and Lossie Rivers Trust office, Logie Steading, Dunphail, Forres, Moray, IV36 2QN.
Due to the nature of the role the candidate must be based in or nearby to the River Findhorn, Nairn and Lossie catchment areas.

Start Date: As soon as possible, ideally early May – to be discussed with selected candidate

Closing date for applications: Thursday 19th March 2026 at 12.00 noon

Interviews: Morning of Tuesday 31st March 2026 (online or in person)

This internship is supported thanks to funding from SSEN Transmissions Community Benefit Fund, and in collaboration with Fisheries Management Scotland, the Scottish Fisheries Coordination Centre, and NatureScot.

 

Role details

What can you expect?

  • Interns will gain hands-on experience of catchment and fisheries management
  • The opportunity to develop practical conservation skills
  • Interns will take part in 4 CPD training opportunities organised jointly by Fisheries Management Scotland and NatureScot
  • Work on projects ranging from:
    • Outreach and engagement with community groups, volunteers, and students
    • Species monitoring and survey fieldwork
    • Water quality, temperature and freshwater invertebrate monitoring
    • Control of non-native invasive species
    • Habitat enhancement activities such as planting of native trees and barrier easement
    • Data management and GIS mapping

What support will you get?

  • Real Living Wage at £13.45 per hour, paid monthly (FNLRT is an accredited Real Living Wage employer)
  • Support from a mentor
  • Access to PPE, safety equipment and office equipment as required
  • Support to help with travel costs to training events
  • Completion certificates

What we are looking for (Person Specification):

  • Good interpersonal skills that contribute to collaborative/team working and customer orientated service provision
  • Written communication skills, including the ability to write clearly and concisely and keep records
  • An interest in working with volunteers
  • A desire to develop practical species, land and habitat management skills
  • An understanding of freshwater habitats and why water quality issues are important
  • Enthusiasm about participating in outdoor learning activities and events and encouraging volunteers and young people to participate

A full driving license and access to your own vehicle is essential.

You must have the right to work in the UK (e.g. UK/Irish citizen, or indefinite leave to remain). Your right to work must be verified before the internship can commence.
